Fordite (Detroit Agate) as a custom pendant
Fordite can look like a brilliantly banded stone, but it is hardened automotive paint. Successive layers create stripes, contours, and rings that become visible when the material is cut and polished. A cabochon can reveal an unexpectedly graphic composition, from narrow ribbons of color to broad, contrasting arcs.
Also called Detroit agate, Fordite is human-made material reclaimed for lapidary work. It is not a natural agate or a mineral. That distinction is part of its appeal: a custom Fordite necklace brings industrial color and the maker’s decisions into a wearable object, with every cut revealing a different arrangement.
Where Fordite comes from
Traditional Fordite accumulated as paint overspray in automotive factories and hardened through repeated production processes. GIA has documented material from the Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky, as well as references to other factory sources. “Detroit agate” does not guarantee Detroit origin, a particular manufacturer, or a vehicle model. Those claims require documentation for the actual material.
Factory history and material provenance vary. The origin of the studio’s current Fordite is not verified unless documented for that specific piece.

Fordite (Detroit Agate): personal meaning
Fordite has no established ancient crystal tradition. Its story can instead represent ingenuity, creative reuse, or continuity between past and present. These are personal interpretations of the material’s history. A recipient who enjoys engineering or design may value that connection more than any conventional gemstone symbolism.
Metaphysical associations reflect spiritual beliefs and personal symbolism, not scientifically established effects.
A distinctive gift for a car or design enthusiast
A Fordite pendant is a considered choice for someone who appreciates automotive history, strong color, or unexpected materials. Let their preferred palette guide the design. Unless your particular piece has documented provenance, choose it for its individual pattern rather than promising a connection to a specific car.
Designing your fordite (detroit agate) piece
A rectangle can frame the layers like a small graphic print; designer’s choice gives the maker freedom to follow a striking contour. Keep the finish simple so the color remains central. Fordite is paint-based, so handle the polished piece gently and protect it from abrasion, heat, and solvents.
You choose the stone type, shape, and size. Choose a loose cabochon, a pendant with a bail for your own chain, or a complete pendant and chain. Custom drawings are reviewed for feasibility before cutting, and your notes stay with your design.
