Mahogany Obsidian as a custom pendant

Mahogany obsidian puts warm brown and deep black together in an irregular, flowing pattern. Some areas look like scattered islands; others form broad swirls. A polished cabochon brings those contrasts into a continuous surface, making the placement of the cut an important part of the finished design.

Compared with an all-black obsidian pendant, mahogany obsidian has a more earthy palette. A slim baguette can pick out a single sweep of color, while a shield gives several markings room to interact. The result can be visually bold without bright colors or an elaborate finish.

Where is mahogany obsidian found?

Mahogany obsidian is a patterned variety of volcanic glass, formed when molten material cools without developing a conventional crystalline structure. Glass Butte in central Oregon is one documented locality with mahogany material among other obsidian varieties. Obsidian occurs in volcanic regions worldwide; a brown-and-black pattern by itself does not establish the location of an individual piece.

These are known occurrences of the material type. The origin of the studio’s current material is not verified unless stated for that specific piece.

Mahogany Obsidian: meaning & metaphysical associations

Modern obsidian traditions connect the material with grounding, strength, and self-reflection. For mahogany obsidian, its earthy colors can make those ideas feel especially fitting. A pendant may serve as a personal reminder to stand steadily through change, without implying that wearing volcanic glass produces a physical or psychological effect.

An earthy gift with a strong silhouette

Choose mahogany obsidian for someone who likes warm neutrals, wood tones, or graphic design. A custom necklace can mark a milestone without relying on a conventional birthstone. Think about the shapes they already wear, then use your notes to request a balance of brown and black that suits their style.

Designing your mahogany obsidian piece

A cushion or oval softens the contrast; a kite makes it more angular. Designer’s choice lets the maker follow the most interesting part of the pattern. Protect polished obsidian from hard knocks, and choose a loose cabochon if you plan to use a separate setting.

You choose the stone type, shape, and size. Choose a loose cabochon, a pendant with a bail for your own chain, or a complete pendant and chain. Custom drawings are reviewed for feasibility before cutting, and your notes stay with your design.
